I worked in IT for 15 years. There are often non-overlapping theories to explain computer crashes. We often told users that it was sunspots or magic. (Most common things are user error and memory corruption though.)

One of the MAJOR basic problems is “definitions” – “Theory” has an entirely different meaning to the scientist than to the layperson and yet both groups bandy that term about with abandon…
