That was the plot of an Alfred Hitchcock episode. He embezzles $5 million, then turns himself into the police. Goes to jail for seven years. The day he gets out the police tell him that he’ll go back in unless he returns the money. He Returns the money. Last shot is him on an ocean liner telling people about how he got rich playing the stock market.

On average, bank robberies net criminals just $7,500. That’s a very low rate of return for 8 years.

The famous bank robber, Willie Sutton once said, when asked why he robbed banks: “Because that’s where the money is!”

Wonder if Elwood put the money someplace where it will be accruing interest for 8 years.
