When I built cabinets and fancy containers, I avoided measuring (with a measuring tape) at all. I laid out “nice” dimensions on sticks and used the sticks to set the tools to do the work. The set of sticks was then drilled at one end and hung together with a picture or description. Then sometimes even years later, I could pretty easily make another one. Of course, I’ve since moved away from my shop and tools… and all the measuring sticks.
Yeah. If you ordered cabinets to fit in your existing kitchen, I did in fact use a tape measure to get initial dimensions. But I still used my cabinet sticks to make the drawers, doors, etc.

I think it is ‘Keep cutting until you find the right spot.’

With me, it’s “measure three times and get a different result each time”.
Luckily I’m neither a surgeon nor a carpenter.

Measure twice, cut once. My late husband and his brothers were in construction, and that was their mantra.

Measure twice, cut once, force it to fit, caulk it, paint it. Works every time.

If this was from 1954, it would explain why I have a 10’ scar down the middle of my stomach, from my appendectomy.

Cut twice and see if they are even…
