Last time I was there the stairways were closed. I’m glad I got to do it earlier (elevator up, climb down) because there are interesting displays from the states on the landings.
The height of the Washington Monument is 555 feet 5½ inches because the Freemasons who arranged the work had to work in some numerological Easter eggs.
In metric terms, the height is 169 meters, which is 13 squared, and thirteen is of course the number of original colonies, often referenced in subtle ways in American symbolisms. The capstone of the W.M. is in fact not a stone at all, but a block of aluminum, which has atomic number thirteen!
(And I’ve seen the Washington Monument up close. It doesn’t look a thing like him.)
