The great Montreal hockey goalie Ken Dryden, in retirement, joined a senior hockey beer league. He refused to play goal for exactly Hugh’s reason: that he wasn’t up for clinging to his decaying, fading skills. Instead he played defense, something he’d never done, and where he could actually improve at something.
