Good grief, we just know better today. Anyone else remember the era (for instance), where baseball teams would take a Mike Mitchell or a Bill Campbell or a John Hiller, pitch them 150+ innings for a couple seasons, and blow out their arms to the point where they were never again much good? Or when just about every player in every sport smoked, lived on steaks and beer, and spent the offseasons goofing off? (Hockey great Phil Esposito once said in an interview that they pretty much spent the first week of training camp puking over the boards.)
