“True as a die,” is an old expression dating to the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. Instead of every part for everything being made entirely by hand, machine tools stamped out parts from carefully made & hardened metal dies – lowering the cost of production and, in the opinion of the 19th century Arts & Crafts Movement sucking all the life and beauty out of the world. I’m rather surprised any writer used it in the 20th century but I guess he’s playing with the language “die” a metal piece you need to carefully align so it’s true with “die” in what the lion does.
