I heard more yesterday about the looting in my Walmart. I heard the looters came in 2 separate groups. They still did not get a lot and it could have been much worse than it was. I heard now they made off with 3 or 4 TV’s (not just one like I heard on Sunday), a few other electronic items and a little clothing. The real head scratcher is the fact someone took a lawn chair and the one that’s almost funny is that someone stole a bag of potato chips. Seriously? Someone risks getting arrested over a bag of potato chips? I don’t know how hard police are working to find out who broke in, but I sort of suspect they won’t try at all as the riots and demonstrations are still going on. I also heard yesterday that the Target store which is not far from my Walmart was also hit, but I don’t know how bad it was. I can tell you, it’s very unsettling to see our windows boarded up and the barricades being put up in front of our doors after the store closes. Big stacks of pallets and pallets full of cases of water completely block the front entrance and exit doors. Associates working past 9:00 pm (as I did Monday night) have to exit through a fire door in back of the store. I don’t know how the managers get out after the rest of us leave. The fire door has to be latched from the inside. I don’t know how much longer we’ll need to barricade the doors at night. I can’t even describe how this all makes me feel. I guess I feel violated. And I feel less safe than ever before. I’ve always known that violence could hit our store, but I never really thought it would. Now it has and it’s sort of hard to come to terms with what happened and to get over the feeling of sadness and despair that has come over me. Time heals all wounds, I guess and I guess this feeling will eventually go away and I’ll be able to put it behind me. Soon, I hope.
