From yesterday’s comments, dbrucepm said in his “special days” post, “1794 Eli Whitney patents the cotton gin, revolutionizing the cotton industry in the southern US states”
I can never think of Eli Whitney without thinking of a certain marble I found on the school playground when I was a little kid. It was sort of a cloudy white with sort of a little air bubble in it. The “bubble” made me think of cotton balls. So I named my marble Eli Whitney so I would always remember that he invented the cotton gin. My brothers thought I was goofy for naming a marble. And maybe I was. But it was the only marble I ever owned (my brothers, though, had scads of marbles) and I still have it to this day.
