When we were kids in the ’50’s, we’d say that a girl had cooties just to pick on her. We’d “inoculate” ourselves by acting like we gave ourselves “shots” in both shoulders. It was occasionally cruel, when poor girls (I don’t know why, but it was always girls) who may not have had the best hygiene in those days were the ones being picked on. Looking back, it was reprehensible behavior on the part of those of us who did the teasing, and in today’s culture it would probably be considered bullying. It’s one thing that I am ashamed of in my childhood. That doesn’t mean that this particular comic series isn’t funny—it is—it just reminds me of how cruel children can sometimes be.
