I guess the older father had the younger father at “our youngest is … moving back home.”

Always a parent. You eventually become more of a friend than an authority.

Yes, you do get to stop, unless you raise chronically dependent losers who prefer coming back to leach to honest work that happens to be unlikely to make them wealthy, and then you go along with their aborted adulthood.

I just want to point out to @megonow that the leader of the UK has told people its the patriotic thing to do to move in with their parents to save for a deposit for a house.
He does not think you should be able to afford a deposit for a house, even on two incomes, often at least one of them a decent income or at least above the median, unless you are also living rent free. Just saying.
(Also, some people do charge their kids rent, and some kids move home to take over the mortgage if temporary unemployment, or illness, such as cancer, befalls a parent. There are SO MANY options, even within your worldview. Don’t assume.)

There was a movie called “Parenthood” in the late ‘80s. It was a comedy, but Steve Martin said one thing that was absolutely true: "There’s no end zone in parenthood. You’ll never get to cross the goal line and spike the ball and listen to the crowd cheer. You just get on a roller coaster and you NEVER get off."

So many phases of parenthood, each a challenge. Make it through to adulthood and you may be lucky enough to be a grandparent !!
