We saved like crazy with 529’s, UTMA’s, savings bonds (remember those!?), etc. to get our 2 kids through college debt free, and had enough left over for grad school too. Not rich, just live modestly, it was easy. Now in a comfortable retirement.
When did Uncle Ted go to college? If he’s in his sixties, college was comparatively very affordable at his normal college age. State tuition was $2.00 per semester hour in the state where I attended.

My 50 yr old son is still paying his off because they keep letting him defer when he’s in a pinch. Makes enough now but bad money manager!

Pfft! That’s ridiculous! Everybody knows you can never pay off your student loans. You can’t even get rid of them in bankruptcy.

Sad a guy making a million dollars a year, but destitute paying against a student loan.

Saw that punchline coming in the first panel. Still laughed though.

At the rate it takes to pay them off, I wouldn’t be surprised if our tombstones also noted how much we had left to pay on the day we died.
Here lies Nicole. 1977-2077 $65,986 left on her student loans.
