I’ve forgotten what a dipthong is, but I’m sure that Dean is a great example.

Dean does looks like a dipth.

Guess you HAVE forgotten a lot from last year. BTW, I thought you were going to start going to bed earlier to get ready for school. I thought that was a very mature decision, so what the heck are you doing posting at 1:30 or so EDT? Best wishes and hoping for a quick recovery from your leg damage. It can’t be any fun- my next-door neighbor, about your age at the time, stepped into a hole at the beach on the first day of her family’s vacation at the shore. Fractured her ankle. Talk about a bummer! Start reviewing your dips and your thongs, and listen to Marg- if you want respect, show respect and watch your language. You’ve seen enough on these forums to know that people tend to judge you by your words, not your intent. They can’t see what you meant.

oh this is a good one! It helps if you have kids who learned these words in elementary school.

The “ow” sound in “couch”, or “cow” is actually two vowel sounds… short “o” like in “hot”, and then “ooh”, said in very quick succession. Cah-ooch.

That’s what a dipthong is.

“Coin” said slowly enough to hear the dipthong would be “Co-een..”

If it were NOT a dipthong, that is, if we couldn;t hear the second vowel, “i”, it would sound like “cone” or “con.”

I don’t really hear a dipthong in “bait” … no, I do….it’s “bay-eet”.

We run them together so quickly we think it’s one sound… but it isn’t.

Seeing a dip like Dean in a thong makes us run quickly, too.

Ok, my inner English teacher and speech pathologist are clamoring to get this out. Please note…you have all left the first h out of the word….it’s dipHthong. Prounounced “dif-thong”.

Now I am going to have to change from calling people like Dean “Dips” to calling them “Diph’s”!

I don’t know if Dean is a diphthong, but I’m sure he’s a thong dip.

Thongs are not for everyone.

My elementary school teachers misinformed me. They said that consonants combined for one sound, like “ch,” were diphthongs.

Thanks, Radish. I had thought that if you pronounced it Dee-ahn or Dee-un it would be some kind of pun, but nothing came to me. Now I know why. I suppose the name “Dean” was chosen because it has two adjacent vowels, albeit not a dipthong, and that might (did, in my case) confuse the reader.

Johnny — I knew that! I mean I knew you were joking… of course, unless given evidence to the contrary, I also take many many things meant to be serious as jokes.

And bite IS a dipthong, as pcolli pointed out… in the US bye-eet; in Oz, and parts of the UK, buh-eet.

JPS — yeah, Dean too.. Dee-in….would be just long “e” but you almost can’t say deen without a bit of “in” sound at the end.
