Back in the days when there were only 3 TV networks, about 40-50 syndicated comic strips, and no Internet, almost everybody would’ve figured out the crossover. I’m much happier with the variety we have in the 21st Century, but inevitably it means that we’ve lost some of that sense of community we got from all having the same cultural references.
