There is such a thing as a manure fork. The ones I used had 5 tines and a hand grip built into the end of the wooden handle, similar to a snow shovel. We used them for horse manure and for handling straw to bed them down with. Shovels were only used like dustpans after sweeping down the aisles.
There is also a hay fork which has only 3 tines (see “American Gothic” painting) and a longer wooden handle with no hand grip at the end. And of course it is used for pitching hay and is what most people call a pitchfork.
It sounds like what you’re talking about is strictly B.S.
