Our kitty used to burrow under the throw rug in front of the sliding glass door. It’s one of those rubber backed, non sliding kind but she managed to get under it.
Funny how almost any paper product hold attraction for cats (as well as bunnies). Boxes, magazines, books, bags, and homework (if written on paper.) Warm the paper in sunlight or under a lamp and it is sure to draw attention.
It seems to me that, MAYBE, just maybe, they have the memory of being put in a box and removed from their mother to go to a new home. Just my thoughts.

A cloth bag works well too.

sometimes you can just mark a square on a floor with tape and the cat will sit inside of it

When our girl was a kitten she just fit in a kleenex box, as an adult she would remember, try again and just get her head stuck in it.

Our feral cat, Black Sabbath, does not understand boxes. He’ll look at it like “And your point is?”
