Just in case someone isn’t familiar with those songs, ‘If I Had A Hammer’ was written in 1949 by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays in support of the Progressive movement. It was first recorded by the Weavers, a folk music quartet composed of Seeger, Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman. It became a Billboard #10 hit for Peter, Paul and Mary in 1962 and then went to #3 when recorded by Trini Lopez in 1963.

“Second verse same as the first” was a lyric from the 1965 song ’I’m Henry VIII I Am’ by the British group Herman’s Hermits.
