I always navigated by maps when I was working. It did require some advance planning since it is not a good idea to try to read and drive at the same time. But, my very favorite thing to do while traveling is to driving for a destination with no map or GPS at all, just going by the feel of the land, a compass and the location of the sun.
GPS vary in how good they are by manufacturer. We had one that would route us up roads then tell us to make a U turn and then go through parking lots of malls. We got a different one from another co and it did not do that, it does however when we are heading north on the street we live on, tell us to make a left turn at a specific corner, then make a right on a parallel road, then a right turn back to our street, left turn on our street to continue in the same direction we were going – we ignore it. Got a second one from the first co included with a vehicle – does the same as the first one.
Husband has learned that a wife is better than a GPS (and also a spellchecker, but that is another story).

I have used the talking maps. And the printed google maps. Easier to read the paper map when I orient it to where I am. Good thing I read upside down.
