The Buckets by Greg Cravens for July 09, 2014
Transcript:
See this picture I drew? Super-Spiderman has all these cool powers and an awesome costume! He so cool that comic books and movies and shirts and stuff will sell like crazy. All right! What do we do first? Tell everyone? No! We gotta keep him a secret, cause we don't want the comic book companies to steal the idea! Ooh! Right!

I had an advertising client once who swore she thought of the name ‘Ziggy’ as a young girl. She went on to tell me that she’d thought of another fantastic comic strip character name, and wanted to know what it was worth. I started to say that she’d have to draw up some strips and send them to the syndicates… and she interrupted to say that she just wanted to sell the name to a cartoonist so she could put her daughter through college. The explanation about why that wasn’t going to work went on a ways. She never did say what the name was, for fear I’d ‘steal’ it.

She’s a true American, Greg … Come up with a mediocre idea, convince someone it’s a GREAT idea and sell it for a bundle. Money for nothin’ and the checks for free! Except … It rarely works that way except in people’s dreams. Good story.

I think I see a flaw in his plan…

I “invented” coffee teabags as a teen back in the 70s. All of my coffee drinking family told me it was the dumbest idea they’d ever seen and there was no way you could make coffee like that. I tossed the idea aside. It was around 1985 that, I believe Folgers, brought the exact thing to market. My family also refused to invest in Microsoft when Bill Gates was basically going door-to-door seeking investors. I don’t think he even had the name Microsoft yet.My family has never been considered bright.

I love Eddie’s eyes peeking over the comic border in panel 1.

you’re right the expressions are wonderful. Toby’s “MINE!” (he might not be saying it, but he is thinking it!).I always wondered about the publishing end – how you start, where to go, etc. At least the internet and bookstores give you places to start your research. … someone coming along and saying “gee that’s look’s great! wonderful idea! Here’s a load of money!” only happens in movies. ;)
