I was just assuming that they think Dusty is going to get them way too close to something that’s muddy, wild, out-of-order, or otherwise likely to snag or shred clothing.
Taking a spare pair of pants, as one would to a brush-clearing followed by a garden party, is simply the Professor being his cautious self.
