Growing up, we didn’t have AC. My dad had this exhaust fan which he would put in the dormer window of my bedroom, blowing outward.
The fan was huge. It took up the whole bottom section of a double hung window.
Dad would close all the windows in the house (2 story cape cod with a daylight basement) and he would leave back door in the basement open by about a foot.
When he turned on the fan, my brother and I could launch paper planes in the upper stairwell and they would get sucked upstairs.
Between the fan and the tall oak shade trees, our house stayed cool, even in sweltering DC summers.
The problem was: the fan was noisy. It droned like a small plane.
