I remember once watching an Italian movie when I was a kid (it must have been subtitled). I was confused as to why they kept saying “ciao”, as I thought they were saying “chow”, which to me meant food. I think that very same mistake also came up in a “Fusco Brothers” comic strip a number of years ago.
