People with this mindset are either narcissists (I’m SO important that everybody MUST be talking about me), nosey (OMG!!! What are they talking talking about?!)or BOTH.
That middle panel goes a long way toward helping me understand why people get upset when they hear a language they don’t understand being spoken.My first thought is always, can I tell what language they are speaking? If it’s one that I know a few scraps of, I try to catch what they’re saying. When I can make anything out, it’s something mundane, like I’m on my way home, or We have three stops before we get off.
But those same people think nothing of speaking English when they visit another country. Why can’t THEY learn a few phrases in the language of whatever country they visit (especially languages of major countries – Spanish, French, German, Japanese, etc)? It is a two way street, people.
Most of the world tells some form of this joke: What do you call a person who speaks two languages? Bilingual. Three languages? Trilingual. One language? American!
