    I went to High School in Germany in the 60’s. (Military kid). One thing you learned very quickly was not to stick out your thumb from a closed fist to hitch hike. You waved an open hand up and down. A thumb out is the European one finger salute. Didn’t get many rides that way.

    “Ich drücke dir die Daumen.” is the German equivalent of I’ll cross my fingers for you… but why does having your fingers crossed mean you didn’t really mean it?
