    I remember when there got to be so many people in town that we had to add a ‘prefix’ to our phone number. It got harder then to call my relatives in town—had to remember the correct prefix rather than just their 4 digit phone number.

    I remember when you NEVER got a dial tone. The operator would say “Number, please” and you would tell her the number (it was always a ‘her’).

    My mother was a telephone operator and she sometimes caught my brother and me when we were calling around asking about ‘Prince Albert in a can’ or inquiring about the state of someone’s Frigidaire.
