Back in the very early ’60’s when there was all the uproar about Tropic of Cancer and other “shocking” books, several of us started a hoax that got slightly out of hand.It centered around a non-existent book called Seldom Comes the Dawn about a Swedish anthropologist who went to live with the Laplanders and went “native”. – ala Margaret Mead. The adventures were so scandalous that the book was even banned is Sweden ! My collegiate buddies and I had managed to ‘smuggle’ an English translation into the States and were "absolutely shocked by the content !
What started as a spoof , fast became something of The Emperors’ New Clothes , with noted professors and others claiming to have read this fictional fiction and weighing in on both sides of the book banning/censorship argument. It started in the sleepy college & university town of Burlington, Vermont and went viral – long before the days of internet. A printer in Rutland, Vermont ( who we did not even know ) actually ( with tongue firmly planted in his Yankee cheek ) sent us a dust cover for our imaginary masterpiece !
To this day, I have found people who claim to have read the book and " remember vividly" the erotic anthropological adventures. Seldom Comes The Dawn should definitely be on HRM’s hit list.
wasn’t she held captive behind this creep’s house. A convicted sex offender who had periodical visits by his parole officers, and a wife, and his mother. that missed opportunities of law enforcement to rescue is perceived as incompetent. and a multimillion dollar settlement for the lapses of law enforcement.

The reaction to the book is an excellent example of “attitude policing”. People are reacting to the language used to report the crime rather than the crime itself. It is a way of ignoring the crime.
