In real life, monarchs of that era had to worry about intrigues to overthrow them. Mary Queen of Scots was focal point of one such intrigue, and Elizabeth had her killed for it. Just like Lizzie’s older sister Mary had cousin Lady Jane Grey killed. To make peace, Lizzie named MQS’s son James as her heir.
