I know this so well. And what joy it is to come home to a waiting furry pet (here it is a cat, it seems like she is singing a song for me and never give up to pet my legs and cuddle with me).
I saw a study, they do it with smell (how much it fades). You can mess with their clocks by rubbing dads used clothes around the room halfway through the day.
When I was about 10 my dad traveled between three adjacent states and was gone for a couple of weeks at a time. But about an hour before we expected him home our dog would start to run around the house and go crazy until he would walk in the door. We never understood how he knew.
We live a quarter mile from the main road, but our dogs (outside in their kennels) could always hear my husbands car slow down to turn the corner. They would look toward the corner anytime a car slowed down, but only got excited if it was him.

Old cars develop their own unique combination of squeaks, moans, and rattles. It is like recognizing your favorite group on the radio.

My dogs know when it’s time for breakfast and dinner when they hear my coo coo clock, lol!

If it was one of the highlights of your day, you would probably also instinctively know. You have to rely on a clock.

I swear my dogs have internal clocks. Food is expected at the same time. So is water, bed and expected time home.
