Chagrin Falls "Breaking Silence" Gavin! Dinner. Gavin: one sec…. -if we evolved from monkeys, how come there are still monkeys? click Gavin: There Man1: Gavin Smythe? I want to shake your hand! Man2: we just saw your Facebook comment and rushed right over! Man1: Please come with us to Sweden for a special Nobel Prize ceremony! Man2: You've just disproven Evolution and the basis of all modern Biology! scientist: Im so stupid, stupid! Man1: It makes sense that a man with absolutely no background in Science would see right through 150 years of analysis and experimentation. Man 1: Some people would have done even the most cursory inquiry- perhaps a Google search - before dismissing an entire branch of science based on wholly ill informed question. - Thank God you didn't Man1: Funny! I thought monkeys, and I thought of humans evolving from monkeys, but I never connoted the two! Only your mind could hold both concepts simultaneously! Man1: Now Please, Mr Smythe . SHare your thoughts. odo you have any other dogma- shattering scientific insights?\\Gavin: um… Gavin: Ahem. What is every atom is a tiny solar system with teeny people living in it? GasP! wha? GET ME A MICROSCOPE!!

And of course Gavin has a very good point with his first question, and the answer is that there AREN’T monkeys! At least there aren’t the ancestral monkeys that we and modern monkeys evolved from. And modern monkeys are just as evolved as we are, just in a different direction.

An excellent illustration of the Dunning-Kruger effect..The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which relatively unskilled persons suffer illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their ability to be much higher than it really is. Dunning and Kruger attributed this bias to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their own ineptitude and evaluate their own ability accurately.

I just went through this with my niece, who in comm. college took a few classes in anthropology, and informed me that birds evolved from dinosaurs, and man from monkeys. I am sure she was mis-quoting her instructor on that last, and posed the famous question as in the cartoon. Then I emphatically gave her the “man and apes evolved from a common ancestor” answer, which she Googled to determine I was correct.I will be happy when she learns enough to discover she doesn’t know it all.

But there’s a missing link! And if you find that link then there’s still a gap somewhere that needs a link! The gaps are very small but I won’t be satisfied until you find an example of every generation going back to single celled animals.

I didn’t read all of the comments. Did anyone point out that it’s apes, not monkeys?Or chinchillas, maybe. I really can’t be sure.

I actually know a couple of humans (Amerikastanis, needless to say) who claim the earth is flat. One of them also says gravity does not exist.

That question is exactly as stupid as asking “If I exist, why do my cousins exist?” We didn’t evolve from the monkeys or (other) apes that exist today. We all evolved from a common, likely monkey-like, ancestor. My cousins and I (and humans, apes and monkeys) all exist because our (great * n)-grandparents existed.

How ’bout that—not even one creationist (doc, where are you?) showed up to babble incoherently?! Rationality and science, for the win!
