And the only reason for those schedules was…the previous generation had to do it.

It is like a hazing that involves people dying. The number of deaths due to going to hospitals is about 235,000 as I understand. If you see a doctor it is a minor miracle anyway. The local hospital doesn’t even have an office, it is virtual! You leave a number and you may get a call from someone saying they are a hospital representative. This is called the best health system in the world by the ignorant who haven’t dealt with the system. I went through 3 years of this “wonderful” system with my parents, just kill me when my time comes and get it over with.

The biggest trainers of surgeons was the military. They were always short of doctors and ran nonstop shifts. They took over civilian training and hospitals and run it the way they remember being trained, kind of like a MASH bing weekend.

In the late ‘50s or early ’60s there was a non-fiction book called “Intern” by Dr. X that caused a media stir. The death march work shifts were a big deal. As we all can see things haven’t changed.

This cartoon was drawn in 1993. That’s 26 years ago … and nothing has changed !! Medical interns and residents are still overworked and sleep deprived in order for the hospital to save money and continue an outmoded, barbaric method of training doctors.

I watched my cousin go through med school. For a while, then I had to turn away. I decided then that although there is an educational component to it, the main thing med school does is simply weed out anyone who can’t stand punitive shifts.

The only problem with every-other-night call was missing half of the cases.

Read “House of God” by Samuel Shem. Still pertinent (and funny) after 40 years.

Is it any wonder that there are so many doctors addicted to amphetamines and other drugs?

OMG, I had thought I had escaped the rigors of med school, internship and residency. I ’m glad I went into a specialty practice.
