This reminded me of the days long ago when I had a paper route. I used an elevator to deliver a paper to the fourth floor offices of a local department store, and I can still remember the voice of the operator who always said “Up, please” and “Down, please” when the doors would open. (The store also had escalators, but they only went to the third floor, and were slow-moving.)
Otis didn’t invent the elevator. He invented the automatic brake that prevented people from plunging to their deaths when the cable broke. Not that anyone asked.
