Stuart McLean from the Vinyl Cafe on CBC Radio had done a story once about his son learning to knit. Everyone was to make a family member a handmade(in some fashion) gift for Christmas. Hilarity ensued(to quote a fan from Luann). I miss those stories so much.
Back in the pre-internet day’s Dad was in the service and we moved a lot. Couple that with having severe Asthma and Allergies (to basically any thing green(when I finally got tested my back lit up like a Xmas Tree)) I spent a lot of time indoors. And my mom taught me to knit and crochet, because depending on where we lived we might have 5-6 or only 3 TV channels that came in. Boredom was a real thing.
Knitting Aran style sweaters was once done exclusively by men. Women would card and spin wool to make yarn, but men did the knitting – from patterns that were closely held secrets.
I tried knitting once because I was told it was relaxing. After ten minutes of it I was disappointed that the yarn was too light to be satisfying when I threw it.

In grade 3 we learned how to knit, if we didn’t already know. By grade 4 one of the boys had figured out cable and was knitting Aran style sweaters.

We embroidered. Even the rough and tumble neighbor boys did. Once sewed my project to my overalls.

Spud, the boy of many talents, some imagined, some for real. Also, I thought Amelia was the only one to say For Realzies.

Go, Spud. Now Amelia’s regretting that she deigned to allow you to BUY — not make — her a present this year.
