Sometimes.It has several meanings, with incomplete consensus on their order.But most people will think of Wilmer, from “The Maltese Falcon”, as I’m sure you know…Some writers believe Hammett was the first to use the word “gunsel” in a way the censors would assume meant a “small-time gunman,” because it contains “gun.”They think he actually meant for Spade to insult him with the homosexual term, when a more blatant gay reference would be unacceptable..Others say the word was already used for both, or that it may have been a neologism, as “sel” is a common Yiddish diminutive.

In any case, the common modern usage prevails…And I reserve the right to talk about “gay colors” or my “girlfriends” without anyone jumping to conclusions about sexual preference.Besides… who knows what the fellow in the cartoon actually wants to become.Heck, maybe he finds the mob boss attractive.
