The term “Damsel in distress” seems to be a Victorian invention. Knights were often shown as rescuing damsels in the old legends but the damsels often turned out to be sorceresses or even godesses. The term “Damsel in distress” is now largely seen as part of the weakening of women in Victorian society although this was better than the demonising of women during the witch hunts of the Rennaissance Era.
If someone asked for help in earlier decades, the response usually was, Sure. How can I help?, Nowadays it seems to be Tell me exactly what the problem seems to be. It’s called selective samaritanism.

That’s like someone saying of an unexploded bomb, “It’s okay. It’s one of ours.”
