I gave up on economizing for Christmas. My wife would try to limit my weekly expenditures(lunch, gas/bus or train fare), so that she had enough to spend on all her family. so after her nephews got married, they then got the idea of a secret santa, rather than buying our children gifts.
I gave her the checkbook and made her responsible for everything(I took what I needed) – she has toned it down a lot since then(she doesn’t want to be homeless).

We do our Christmas shopping with cash or our debit card. We save up so that we can do that. We also don’t go all hog-wild. Ho ho ho…we don’t owe.
