Actually, the rhyme was a riddle. Egg was the answer. I remember seeing this in a book of nursery rhymes as a child.

This one cracked me up.
As Curly would say if you egged him on, “Yolk yolk yolk!”
But why was Humpty sitting on the wall? There’s a book (whose title I forget) featuring Detective Joe Dumpty that delves into this.
I’m guessing that the yoke is scrambled!
