Wearing some skivvies might have insulated this brave knight from his cold steel of war. And shrinkage avoided for his planned amorous rendezvous with the milk maid in yonder barn. The last thing he needed was a good laugh.
If you didn’t have a country childhood (on a farm, not at a resort) then you don’t know the horrors of ‘ye old swimming hole’ and that bacteria-ridden black mud on the bottom.
Actually, I’m thinking that the joke has something to do with the way Rodney jumped — his bottom would be the first thing to hit the water. That would explain also why the puddle in the last panel is only around his bottom. But really, this one is obscure; it could be the pond bottom that is referenced.

…either that or a crocodile.

Jumping in a pond while wearing chain mail would invite a bad case of rust (besides drowning.)

He’ll get over it. He’s just a little rusty.

How’d he jump back out with all that armour? Did the pond-ness monster bite his bottom?

It’s icky, not to be too technical about it.

Should have sent someone in to scout the pond, Rodney!

Rod jumped out more like someone pinched his bottom!

Come on. You have armored feet. What creepy, wormy, slimey thing from the mud and muck of the bottom could possibly hurt you.

I forget the advantages of living on the west coast of Lake Michigan. Beautiful beaches with sandy bottom for the lake.

Arguably, this is more sanitary than the public pool.

For those unfamiliar, the bottom of a pond typically feels like ankle-deep lumpy jello.

Should only be frightening if something on the bottom touched you.

A 3 panel comic that requires this much discussion did not succeed in getting its point across!

It might help if you didn’t jump in the water while wearing armor, Rodney.

Sad how few people it seems have actually had the opportunity to swim in a pond. Let’s just say it’s not like a backyard pool and leave it at that.

Swimming in armor is never a good idea…
