Thatâs the story Iâve heard. The term âMaydayâ also comes from the French. More to the point, it comes from an English speakerâs mishearing of French. The original phrase is âMâaidez!â meaning âHelp me!â To an English speaker, this sounds like the words âmay day.â A French speaker could also say "aidez moi,â which doesnât sound like anything in English. If your plane is spinning, though, you probably want to say whatâs quickest.
