Bingo. When all patriotic holidays lose their distinctiveness and become only generic patriotic holidays, they become only generic hollowdays. Memorial Day is not Veterans Day is not Independence Day, just like Pentecost is not Easter is not Christmas, and your wife’s birthday is probably neither St. Valentine’s Day nor your anniversary.

My problem with Memorial Day is that there are too many politicians who love dead veterans but have no use or love for the living, wounded veterans they helped create with their bigger love of war.

I worked for Wal-Mart for six-and-a-half years, and they did a pretty good business with tombstone markers.

These days “hero” is a word that is so overused that it has practically lost its meaning. Someone rescues a kitten from a tree and the tv reporter calls him a hero or a school kid donates his lunch money to some worthy cause and he is called a hero. Well, the men and women we honor today are the TRUE heroes. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could keep the spirit of Memorial Day all year long? Sadly, in a week’s time, we (myself included) will probably have forgotten about about their sacrifices. I pledge to try to do better.

@retiredDudeI have a hard time forgetting. I served at Arlington Cemetery during the Vietnam War. It still haunts me all the many caskets coming through.

Many more civilians died than military troops. Civilians starve way before troops, as well as being targets or incidentals
