MOst would rather you ask than assume incorrectly. What everyone “thinks” they know about Islam is inaccurate at best because of what the media feeds us about the extremists. Islam is truly a religion about peace.
Riiight. And so is Christianity. Or did a mere handful of fundamentalist extremists ruin their image too?People are people, and it is only people who practice religion. With all that practice, you’d think someone would have gotten it right by now.
When I was a kid, we heard the term “Moslem”….. it wasn’t until Malcomb X that I ever heard “Muslim”. As a kid, I did not know if this was the same thing. The fact that this supermarket customer felt comfortable enough to ask a stranger a question (which we do not even know is related to religion….she might be asking where the bread aisle is!), means that Huda looks kind and friendly. A good chance to help the non-Muslim world learn that Muslims are 99.99999999% normal people and neighbors rather than terrorists. It will take a long time to eradicate the fear caused by 9/11.
We had an exchange student from Morocco stay with us for a year. He was a sweet young man, and honestly, if we had custom ordered a son, we’d have ended up with Youssef.
We explained to him that we go to church every Sunday, and while we certainly didn’t expect him to convert, these are our friends and we wanted him to get to know them, and vice versa. He came with us sporadically, but then became good friends with our organist and her husband. He sang in the choir most weeks and when we had our Mass of Many Languages on Pentecost, he read the story of the Tower of Babel in Arabic. When the gal who was supposed to do the Prayers of the People didn’t show up, our Muslim son prayed for Christ’s Church and the World in Spanish!
He loathed the Taliban and all that they stood for. When they bombed the school in Beslan he nearly wept. “That’s not religion! You don’t get people to agree with you by killing their kids! Show them Allah’s mercy! Then they will understand!”
He was in college when the planes hit the Twin Towers on 9/11; there was no mosque, so he went to the local Episcopal church. He said he knew how to act there, and he would be welcome. He left me speechless.
