At 8 y/o I learned to wash dishes; at 10 I washed them occasionally; at 12 I was chief dishwasher; at 14 I was doing the family’s laundry; at 16 I did all the family’s food shopping and cooking (my choice—I like to cook). My mom believed that I should learn to keep house (this was in the 1950s) and that I should carry my fair share of the chores. I grumbled and procrastinated, but I did my share anyway. As for the cooking, I did negotiate for money enough to pay for my horseback riding lessons.

Time for much more home schooling. Always the best to mom and dad.
