I understand Agnes perfectly. I really didn’t (don’t) consider myself particularly bright, and my grades showed it. My mum kept haranguing me – bouncing back and forth between “you can do better than this” and “don’t show off”. One time, I made the Honor Roll, simply to prove that, in my words, any dummy could do it. Of course, “any dummy” was one of Mum’s favorite expressions, too.
