I work in law enforcement. I see plenty of addicts and ruined lives. Even so, I say that management is what is needed, not prohibition.
The Eighteenth Amendment was a total failure and caused a big increase in crime – and here we are, almost a hundred years later, still repeating that same mistake.
Remove the criminality, let Uncle Sugar make a fortune making and taxing newly legal products and put one percent of the cost of the so-called War on Drugs into building a huge network of free rehab clinics. (Take another one percent and you could probably build a mental health system for America that would be the envy of the world – instead of putting our mentally ill into prisons.)
No more pushers, no more home invasions, no need to steal to feed your habit, about 50% less prison population AND the economies of the third world nations that currently produce stuff for consumption here would probably collapse. (Of course, our own government wouldn’t like that too well – they’d have to give up entertaining certain visiting foreign businessmen and their armed retinues at twee little country B&Bs.)
Those that can handle it will do okay. Those that can’t and want help will have it.Those that have a habit and won’t get help – well, Darwin will take care of that for us for free.
What is it that makes someone look at you and think, “now there is someone who may be a possible drug abuser”? (I mean that generally not personally Amanda)
Yeah, while it could be the two possibilities above, it also could have been someone saying the equivalent of “so long and don’t forget to wash behind your ears!” or “don’t forget to look both ways!” without meaning someone had dirty ears or was heedless – in other words, what Amanda said about silly.

Maybe we need to add some flexibility to the rule that everyone is entitled to legal representation.

Two possibilities come to mind:
1 – drug addict who cleaned up his act and is as aggressive as anyone who recently quit smoking
2 – works for a drug rehab program and has forgotten that drug addicts are NOT everywhere.
I lean towards 1, honestly, and good for him if so. And you handled that better than I would have.
