He definitely can use that arm on the shoulder. Looks like Dan’s doing a typically male thing – not wanting to express his sadness about the loss of his mom, so he’s focusing on the aesthetics of the gravestone.
I say this as someone who’s found himself doing similar bits of sublimating my emotions at similar times…
