We started brush training when they are young. Made it a happy time with praise and treats. Now they all demand to be brushed. Except for Fred, the little tuxie. He always looks good.
I was brushing Kirby one day and set the brush down to switch to a comb. The soft-bristle brush was laying with its bristles up. Kirby reached one paw into the bristles with his toes spread, clenched them on the bristles and picked it up to look at it. “How does this thing work?”
It was the most amazing use of paw I have ever witnessed. There is nothing is a cat’s world that you would need to pick up that way.
Our normally sweet tempered golden hisses when groomed. We had a neurotic tuxedo named Dexter who loved being brushed. It was about the only time he’d purr. You could call him by running your thumb over the bristles.
Sounds like life at our house— one loves it & the other doesn’t. Years ago I had an orange tabby who appreciated getting brushed, but when he had enough, would insist on confronting the instrument of torture.
All mine like being brushed, the inside ones anyhow. I had a dog growing up that liked to be vacuumed, and 3 cats who could be vacuumed. Some of my cats are self brushing. I hold the brush still and they walk and rub against it.

They are different as much as we humans are. No two cats (or dogs) alike which is part of their charm.
