Today is Saint George’s Day. Saint George was a Roman soldier in Macedonia who was imprisoned, tortured and executed for his Christian faith. Macedonia is now part of Turkey. Saint George later became the Patron Saint of England and many of our public houses are named after the saint and the dragon that he is supposed to have slain.

Here in Chester, we have a pub called George and the Dragon which stands between Liverpool Road and Parkgate Road. Parkgate is a coastal village which is much smaller than Liverpool. Parkgate was home to a blacksmith’s daughter named Emma who married Lord Hamilton and became Lady Emma Hamilton, the mistress of another lord – Lord Nelson.

The pub called George and the Dragon has been closed since the first Covid lockdown in 2020. It still has it’s large dragon figure. It now has new owners and is being refurbished for reopening next year.
