In an early Popeye strip, the sailor had a similar experience with a defense attorney — but at least the man quickly reversed himself when someone whispered to him that he was supposed to be speaking in Popeye’s defense.

I have seen a defense lawyer do that to somebody. Judge threw the book at the defendant. Didn’t help the defendant showed up stoned.
