Like several commentors here, l’m not afraid to say ‘Andy Capp’ isn’t funny today. I suspect the other critics are remembering the classic Reg Smythe strips that ran from 1957 till around the millennium. Since then, the strip has rarely been funny despite 3 guys taking it over.
I still hang around as this is a social gathering for fellow ‘Andy Capp’ fans such as Godfreydaniel and Number Three and yesterday l looked over comments dated 10 years ago and became emotional reading messages from several no longer with us such as Afficionado and Fan o’ lio.
I also hang around because ‘Andy Capp’ was my favourite newspaper strip and l was fortunate to work for ‘Buster – Son Of Andy Capp’ Comic’. Fellow cartoonist Gary Whitlock (who’s my colourist) and myself approached The Daily Mirror independently (l didn’t know this till he told me) and were unsuccessful in contributing our efforts. I did come close though (about 5 years ago) and the editor was prepared to let me contribute a weekend strip. Unfortunately, one of the contributors working on the strips at the time objected to the idea and l imagine that happened to Gary as well.
Like many here, l miss the unique wit Reg Smythe brought to the strips and in my opinion, there’s over 40 years worth of strips out there that should be recycled. Many of course would have to be omitted due to political correctness since Andy was a wife batterer eventhough Reg made sure Flo eventually fought back!
If The Daily Mirror had begun reprinting the original strips when Reg passed, we’d still only be half way through them by now.
You seem to have interrupted her jilling off, Andrew. Head back out and have a smoke, then come back in quietly, she’ll likely have fallen asleep then.

Could someone please tell me what’s supposed to be funny here? It’s just the worthless, drunken bum being his usual self!

Just how many drunks per year end up safe and sound at home? Probably a low percentage, so we ROOT for Andy (and Flo).

I agree. This one isn’t very funny.

@ No 6 : I noticed that you replied to an old comment of mine. Yes, they WERE fun days!

Late enough that Flo has put away the rolling pin and gone to bed.

The law won because they did not arrest him and have to put up with his singing all night at the station house.

Hopefully he has a fat lip, and Flo has to pull a few teeth out of the subfloor with vice grips !

By the song he is singing, shouldn’t he be in a cell?

How dare Flo be in bed. The good lady should be waiting with a spot of hot brandy for Capp. A night CAPP to help the good fellow gets a nights rest.
