It is definitely Memorial. Panels 1 and 2 – laughing and chatting. Panel 3 – solemnly raising a toast (to the fallen). Panel 4 – laughing and chatting again.
I think that Mr. Johnson’s reason for today’s strip was to make us stop and THINK about the reason for today. I had to stop and think about the strip and why there was no dialog, and why today is different than any other summer week end…..
If you get a chance, read yesterday’s Red and Rover.
This really is a great strip – there is never a compulsion to “always be funny”, yet Jimmy finds the funniest part of normal life. If Jimmy keeps this attitude up (no pressure to always be hilarious), this strip will last a good long time.
The “toast” in panel 3, apparently a somber moment in an otherwise jubilant picnic, showed that the 2 characters remember that the day is meant for remembrance of the war dead.

With as many in-laws and friends as we have, I cherish anytime alone with my wife.

I would submit that when they are together, they are already with their best friend.

Seems odd that they spend no time with Gene and his new family anymore. A holiday barbecue would have been the perfect time for that.

Wouldn’t it be a good time for a trip to the lake to see their son and his wife?

Would have been a good time to take out the boat. We haven’t checked in on Gene and Mary Lou in months.
