Happy winter solstice

As Bill the cat once said, “phbbtttt!”

Uglo down the street got his wife a three carrot present, and she didn’t turnip her nose.

I for one am glad when the winter solstice comes because the days start getting longer rather quickly.

Though it’s late, the holiday is still going on; so, Happy Hanukkah!

Spring is not far behind. :) yeah! Peace.

I am sure it was spring… he was born at tax time after all, and tax time is still in April.

The days are not getting longer. Every day has 24 hours, no matter where you are.

Anyone know if Arlo & Janis bookends are actually available somewhere?

My point. The Winter Solstice is NOT the first day of Winter, it’s Mid-Winter Day. (I haven’t been able to find out which snarklefot changed it or when)

Jesus was born in the spring, at lambing time. Nobody bunks down at night on a snow bank. All of the Gospels agree the shepherds were watching their sheep at night, which would have been to keep the wolves from killing the lambs. There is no contradiction there. And even the Roman Emperor wouldn’t have people ankling all over Palestine in the dead of winter.

As far as using the Winter Solstice as a Christian holiday, it was simply a matter of meeting people where they were. “You have a festival to celebrate the return on of sun? Let us tell you about the return of our Son.”

OK, but every now and then there is a leap second added at midnight New Year’s Eve. Trust me, I’m not cute.

A very old myth.

Actually, Christmas was set on December 25th (NOT the 21st) because in ancient times it was believed that great men died on the date upon which they were conceived. The early church worked out that the first Easter was on March 25th, did the math, and came up with December 25th as the birth date of the Christ Child. Hence, the Feast of the Annunciation (when the angel—traditionally Gabriel—told Mary she would conceive and bear the child of God) is celebrated on March 25th.

Pagan religions celebrated new moons, full moons, solstices, equinoxes, etc. so if you put ANY religious holiday on the calendar, it will fall on or near SOME Pagan celebration.

The earth’s rotation rate slows by 17 millionths of a second per year, so in one seventeenth of a million years, a day (as measured relative to the sun) will be a second longer.
